Hot Tub Cover Care

Hot tub covers are one of the most neglected components of a spa, however they are one of the most important. Most heat loss from a hot tub occurs upwards, out of the surface of the water. A bad cover will be reflected in high heating energy bills.
Hot tub covers take a lot of abuse. They are lifted, tugged, pulled, dropped and dragged. On outdoor spas, they are exposed to the sun and weather year round. After 4 or 5 years of use, most covers are either badly worn or ripped, or their foam cores are heavy, moldy, damp or cracked. The fact that covers even last as long as they do is a miracle !

If you have never replaced your cover, you probably have no idea what covers cost. Did you know that the average spa cover costs between $300-$350 ? In order to get the most out of your existing cover, and prolong its life, follow these tips for proper cover care.

Every other month, the cover should be cleaned and protected. We recommend SPRAY AWAY cleaner and either SPA BRITE wax or KOVER KARE protectant. Do not use ARMOR ALL on spa covers. It prematurely drys out the cover material and causes it to get brittle.

Every 2 or 3 months the cover should be unzipped and the foam inserts should be aired out over night. This will keep the foams from absorbing water and becoming heavy. While airing out the foams, turn covering inside out and spray with a disinfectant such as LYSOL. This will stop that musty smell.

Realize that the less the spa is used, and the less the cover is removed, the more likely the foams are to become waterlogged and moldy. The use of a THERMAL BLANKET under your cover will dramatically help reduce foam waterlogging as well. Take good care of you !
